This is probably the most rewarding way of getting yourself from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang. Do not look at this as just a means of transport to get you to Luang Prabang as you will be travelling at a leisurely pace by boat on the Mekong River for two days with an overnight in the Laos town of Pakbeng on the banks of the Mekong. You will really get to see a slice of Laotian life both on and along the banks of the might Mekong River.

If you are short on time and want to make the run to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai in 2 days but still travel on the Mekong then consider the fast boat service. Like the slow boat combo, you will be transported from Chiang Mai to the Thai – Laos border town of Chiang Kong where you will spend one night. on the following day, you will board the small speed boat which will transport you (at speed) down the Mekong River to the town of Luang Prabang.
